Black History Month 2021 Special

This year brings new and exciting events for Black History Month UK. I kick of the month of celebrations with a bang on Friday 1st of October, as a guest on BBC Radio Scotland’s Afternoon show at 2:30pm, followed by a Sing Sistah Sing! performance in the Glasgow Cathedral Festival that evening at 7PM, with Richard Lewis on piano. This is a one-hour version of the show featuring new music and new amazing female artists. Tickets available here.

I am thrilled to be returning to the BBC Radio Scotland Afternoon Show for a four-part series of interviews with Black Artists in Scotland, this series is produced by my favourite partner in audio adventures Pauline Moore - stay tuned for exact air dates and check the radio section of the website for listen back details.

In Nevis Ensemble news, we are on the road again! We have a 2-day BHM tour the 28th-29th of October in the Glasgow and Central belt area featuring music by black composers. The orchestra has also commissioned a new piece for mezzo and Orchestra by the composer Dominique Le Gendre, featuring poetry by Dean Atta. As always with Nevis we bring Classical Music to Everyone Everywhere, so exact performance locations are determined closer to the tour dates. Keep an eye on my social media for live updates on “Pop Up” concerts, and don’t forget I am now also on Instagram.

I am excited to be working again with the Chineke! Orchestra for a special live rehearsed reading of Caribbean music by Dominique Le Gendre and Adam Walters in the Purcell Room at London’s iconic Southbank Centre on October 20th  at 4PM. New World A Comin’ is a free event but invitations are required for entry, follow the link to secure your entrance here. This is a unique opportunity to hear new music created and performed by black British musicians and singers.

While being black and creative is a 365 days a year way of life for me and so many others, please join us this October as we highlight the extraordinary wealth of black creative talent found here in the UK. I highly recommend checking out the detailed calendar of events created by CRER in Scotland to map out your month of discovery! https://www.blackhistorymonthscotland.org/
